416 Stainless Steel

Synopsis

416 stainless steel is a magnetic martensitic stainless grade that is known for free machining. It has the largest machinability of all stainless steel grades. 416 stainless steel as well as similiar grades are not as resistant to corrosion as other stainless types, it establishes moderate corrosion with high strength on tempered and hardened conditions.

Resistance

Resistant to food/water produce, and atmospheric conditions. While 416 stainless steels are not ideal for sulfuric chemical environments such as oceanic settings. Resistant to heat below its treatment temperature.

Processing

Commonly heat-treated at ~1400°F. This grade can be treated to achieve different mechanical properties, but it lacks high corrosion resistance. The ability to heat treat the grade allows it to be viable in many applications. Our 416 stainless steel can come in two conditions including condition Annealed and condition T.

Applications

  • Pump Shafts
  • Bolts
  • Valves
  • Screws
  • Gears
  • Fasteners
  • Studs
  • Motor Shafts

Benefits

  • Corrosion resistance to natural food acids, natural waters, and waste products
  • Known for being the free machining grade
  • Its hardenability allows it to be used in various applications
  • Fair resistance to sealing at mild temperatures
